RIDING THE TABERNAS DESERT
The Tabernas Desert is officially the only desert in Europe, a region surrounded by large mountain ranges and close to the Mediterranean Sea: a paradise for gravel cycling year-round
Although we have previously discussed this major feature of the land and its famous dry riverbeds known as ramblas, in this article we launch a series of routes for spending a few days exploring its main attractions.
Tabernas is a town of about 4.000 inhabitants with essential services and hotel infrastructure. While it preserves its identity and tourism hasn’t yet overwhelmed its streets, it is accustomed to visitors and professionals working on major film projects.
The proposed routes are not just about cycling through a unique desert landscape, but also about enjoying the great diversity of a territory surrounded by three major mountain ranges (Sierra de los Filabres, Sierra Alhamilla and Sierra Nevada), and located just a few kilometers from the Coast of Almería.
Tabernas Desert – A desert landscape dominated by dry riverbeds and badlands. The routes avoid the Tabernas Desert Natural Area, where only road cycling is permitted.
Sierra Alhamilla – This arid mountain range is located between the Tabernas Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. Its highest point, Pico Colativí, reaches 1.387 meters above sea level, and its ascent offers the best views in the region.
Gérgal Desert – This region is the natural link between the Tabernas Desert and Sierra Nevada, and offers some of the most spectacular routes in the area.
Campo de Tabernas – This semi-desert and mid-mountain landscape, located east of Tabernas, extends to the foothills of the Sierra de los Filabres.
Lucainena de las Torres Greenway – The transition between the Campo de Tabernas and the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is made by means of an old railway line rehabilitated as a cycle path, which runs through a dry and rugged landscape, and which starts from the beautiful town of Lucainena de las Torres.
